The optional workshops listed below are offered in conjunction with the conference to enhance your experience. Please note that these workshops are separate from the course workshops which are included with your tuition on Wednesday, July 29th. Wilderness Survival
Sunday, July 26 or Tuesday, July 28, 1:30 - 5:30 pm. $75.
This workshop is a hands-on skill building experience. You will learn how to construct shelters, obtain food and water, build fires with primitive tools, signal, track, route finding, and create survival kits.

Wilderness Navigation
Sunday, July 26, 1:30 - 5:30 pm. $75.
Learn and use essential skills for trip planning and travel with map, compass, GPS, and altimeter. Something for everyone: beginner to advanced.

Tracking
Monday July 27, and Tuesday, July 28, 1:30 - 5:30 pm. $75.
Learn the lost art of tracking from veteran tracker Scott Kuipers. The ability to notice subtle disturbances in the environment left behind by others (called sign cutting) can be life saving- for finding lost persons and getting out of trouble. Participants also gain insight on animal behavior and human impacts on the natural world.

Ropes & Knots For Wilderness Medicine & Rescue
Monday, July 27, 4:30 - 6:30 pm. $45
Learn how to use ropes and tie knots for high angle rescue, swift water rescue, and improvised medical care.

Wilderness Navigation Practicum
Monday, July 27, 1:30 - 5:30 pm. $75.
A great opportunity to learn, practice, and hone your skills. Follow a compass bearing, verify your location, and interpret terrain while walking on and off trail at Big Sky. Instructor: Nick Beer
Basic Wound Management & Suture Lab
Monday July 27, 2:00 - 4:00 pm. $75.
A practical workshop on suturing and improvised laceration repair in a backcountry environment. Participants will have the opportunity to practice basic suturing, stapling, taping, and tissue gluing techniques on pig limbs. All supplies are provided. (Includes 2.0 additional AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™).

Urban & Travel Survival
Monday, July 27, 1:30 - 5:30 pm. $75.
You have just lost all of your belongings and your passport in an earthquake or act of terrorism. Your hotel was destroyed, and your companion is missing. Few Americans are prepared to cope with this type of crisis. Urban and travel survival can be more challenging than survival in the backcountry. Learn how to travel safely and protect yourself.

Technology for Wilderness Travel
Tuesday, July 28, 1:30 - 4:00 pm. $75.
An update on the latest technologies for wilderness/adventure travel. Make better plans, stay out of trouble and get help when needed. Includes GPS Apps for smartphones, global distress beacons, off-grid communications, and other tools. Field time includes a short, off-grid GPS-powered hike and technology demonstration.

Adventure Photography Workshop
Monday, July 27, and Tuesday, July 28, 2:00 - 5:00 pm. $100.
Learn new ways of viewing and capturing the world from acclaimed National Geographic expedition photographer, Gordon Wiltsie. This 2-afternoon seminar will teach you how to work with nature and your camera to create beautiful, exciting and memorable images in the spectacular landscapes surrounding Big Sky. There will be constructive critique of participants' photographs.

Backcountry Dentistry: Tricks of the Trade
Tuesday, July 28, 2:00 - 4:00 pm. $70.
A unique opportunity to learn and practice techniques for treating common dental emergencies. Topics include: replacing lost teeth, applying temporary fillings, repairing crowns, managing dental and gum trauma, treating dental infections, extractions and more. (Includes all materials and Cavit® for your first aid kit.)

OBSTETRICS IN REMOTE ENVIRONMENTS
Monday, July 27 2:00 - 4:00 pm. $75.
Using mannequin-based simulation, learn and practice management of normal and complicated deliveries in remote settings, including shoulder dystocia, breech delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, and multiple gestation.
